Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is web hosting?
Basically, when a website is made the files need to be physically stored on a computer, often referred to as a web server. When a user navigates to a web page they are connecting to the computer that stores these web files. This is how the Internet works.
There are literally hundreds of companies that offer to store website files and 'serve' them to the world. Many web designers, including myself, offer to handle web hosting rather than leaving customers to figure it all out for themselves.
If you would like me to host your website on my server, I charge £49 a year. This includes domain name registration so there will be no other costs associated with hosting your website. Your hosting package will include the following:
- Your chosen domain name (among those still available) e.g. www.mywebsite.co.uk, or www.mywebsite.com, www.mywebsite.org.
- Up to 6 mailboxes - e.g. info@mywebsite.co.uk, sales@mywebsite.co.uk, myname@mywebsite.co.uk.
- Unlimited web space - no limit on how much text, images, photos and videos you can have on your website.
- Unlimited Bandwidth - no limit on how much information can be transmitted from your website (good for video streaming and/or high volumes of Internet traffic).
- Support for PHP - PHP is a programming language needed for more complex features like shopping carts.
- 10 MySQL databases - again, this supports more complex features.
- Complete ownership of your domain name
- Complete ownership of your email address(es)
- Complete ownership of your website - I will show you how to backup your website on your computer and you will hold copyright over your website.
